Boston Red Sox veterans Jason Varitek and Mike Lowell are about to take the field for Grapefruit League action.

Varitek will catch Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, manager Terry Francona said Saturday.

Lowell will play Monday against the Baltimore Orioles.

Varitek has been away from camp because his father has been ailing.

Lowell had offseason surgery on his thumb. He is working back gradually from that problem and chronic hip trouble as well.

Lowell said Saturday that he would wait before speaking publicly,

"I'm going to stick with that, to play a few games before saying anything. It's not personal,'' the third baseman said with characteristic politeness.

"I think I'd just be redundant from what I've already said.

Francona did not indicate whether Lowell would play first base or serve as designated hitter. He is also been considered at first base.

It looks likely he would play third base. If Lowell's body responds well, he would likely play again Wednesday, though Tuesday has not been ruled out.

The Red Sox are again on the East Coast of Florida for Friday's game, this time in Jupiter, Fla., against the Cardinals. Clay Buchholz, battling for the fifth slot in the rotation, will make the start in a game slated for 1:05 p.m. ET. Kevin Youkilis will be the only member of the starting nine on hand. Adrian Beltre and Jason Varitek were originally on the travel squad, but manager Terry Francona told them to stay back, in large part because the forecast is ominous. Top prospect Jose Iglesias will get some time at shortstop.

The Mets will be in Fort Myers to play the Twins, with left-hander Oliver Perez on tap for his second start. Playing their second game since hearing the jarring news that shortstop Jose Reyes could be out until May, the Mets will have Angel Pagan, Jacobs, Rod Barajas and Gary Matthews Jr. on the trip. The game starts at 1:05 p.m.
